11/09/25 - Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

November 9, 2025

In this combined English and Spanish service, the church begins a Beatitudes series for combined Sundays with a focus on Matthew 5:4, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Hugo shares encouragement in Spanish, reminding the church that pain and tears can draw us closer to God and that God is the true comfort for weary hearts.

Alan then teaches the Beatitude in context, explaining that Jesus is laying out the foundational mindset of true discipleship in the Sermon on the Mount. He highlights that the Beatitudes consistently point toward sacrifice, surrender, and dying to self. In that sense, mourning is not only grief over sin or the brokenness of the world, but also the sorrow and loss that often comes when someone chooses to follow Christ and must give up comfort, approval, and worldly security.

Using examples from Matthew, including the disciples leaving their livelihoods and Matthew leaving his tax booth, Alan explains that discipleship often includes real loss and real mourning. He connects this to Jesus’ call to take up the cross and to the promise that those who lose their life for Christ will find it. The comfort of this Beatitude is rooted in the bigger story: God sees the sacrifice, and He promises eternal blessing, restoration, and comfort to those who follow Jesus faithfully.

The message closes with Jesus’ promise in Matthew 19:27–29 that everyone who gives up anything for His sake will receive far more and will inherit eternal life. The church is encouraged to choose the narrow road, embrace the cost of discipleship, and trust God to comfort and bless those who surrender their lives to Christ.
